Happy Birthday, Steven Spurrier.

American wine owes quite a bit to Steven Spurrier.

The British wine merchant is best known for organizing the Judgment of Paris in 1976, a blind tasting that put some of California’s best wines up against some of the best from France. California wines finished first in both the red and white categories—and suddenly the wine world had to look at California a little differently.

Later in life, Steven became a champion of Virginia wine, long before it was fashionable. He visited Virginia, tasted our wines, and saw their value and potential. Eventually he served as a judge in the Virginia Governor’s Cup competition, bringing National recognition to the event. His support helped bring credibility and attention to a young and growing wine region that is now the 5th biggest in the United States.

Today would have been his 85th birthday. We lost Mr. Spurrier in 2021, but his influence on American wine—and Virginia wine in particular—lives on.

Our Blind Tasting event on October 10th will teach you the way the Certified Somms do it. Led by Keith Bevins, you'll learn what to taste for, what to smell for, the good, the bad and all.

After the education, put it to the test. You'll be given 6 wines and you'll try to figure out which is which. No scoreboards or red pens, just some fun, learning and fine wine.
