News for April 2007

"Sparkling and bright in liquid light does the wine our goblets gleam in;
With hue as red as the rosy bed which a bee would choose to dream in."

-- Charles Fenno Hoffman (1806 - 1884)

Our Jeffersonian Wine Dinner on April 21st is sold out with a long waiting list. However, if you'd like to plan for our next wine dinner, it will be held on June 2nd. We are working on a menu for this summertime dinner and will post it on our website when it is ready. In the meantime, Heritage Hunt Golf & Country Club will be serving Pearmund Cellars wines in a wine dinner at their magnificent clubhouse on May 22nd

Redmund's Reserve at Pearmund Cellars Vineyard WineryAlso, Redmund wants to make sure that all wine dogs are coming to bask in the sun, frolic between the vines, chase frisbees, and receive doggy treats on April 7th. Their owners and friends can come taste his new wine, Redmund's Reserve White, which honors a wine dog's love of life. However, they must be well mannered, play nicely with others, and clean up after themselves. Redmund will greet everyone, pose for pictures with his favorite artist, Linda Hendrickson, and ask for donations to the SPCA.

For a complete list of  our special tastings, both on-site and off-site, see our website. Note that we are closed on Easter Sunday, April 8th.  To serve your family a delicious Easter meal that makes entertaining easy, try Kristin's lamb stew with Cabernet Franc.

Our Process

What do bees, dogs, and wine have in common?  Their noses, of course!  Bees are as sensitive to odor as dogs. They can even be trained to buzz when certain aromas are found. Like wine dogs, they like to frolic around grapes and are gentle to any visitors who don't take their food away.

Pearmund Cellars Bee KeepersDid you know that Pearmund Cellars has an apiary? Rick Tagg and Karla Eisen (otherwise known as the “apiary consultant", a.k.a. "Queen Bee”) installed new package bees just in time for Spring. They literally shook a small box of bees into the hive after placing the queen bee and her attendants in a small cage on one of the frames. Worker bees then ate through a candy plug to free the queen who immediately started laying eggs to produce more bees! Although grape vines are self pollinating, honey bees are a critical part of pollinating many flowers, herbs, vegetables, and fruits. We are indebted to them for a third of our food supply. If all goes well with the “newbees” you might even see some Pearmund Cellars honey (or maybe even mead/honey wine) this Fall.

To learn more or help feed the bees (especially during harvest in August and September), please talk to Rick or Karla. You can also find information on beekeeping from the Prince William-Stafford Beekeeping Association or the Virginia State Beekeepers Association.

Our People

Distributor: Southern Oceans Trading SystemsPearmund Cellars would like to thank our growing list of retailers for their belief in the quality of our wines. Besides featuring these fine wine stores, restaurants, and inns in the Our Partners section of our newsletters, we are now listing new retailers with a special icon.

Stacey Sheetz, our Wholesale Accounts and Private Tastings Manager, has been working hard to ensure that each of our retailers has enough Pearmund Cellars wine to serve our mutual customers. If your favorite wine store doesn't carry your favorite varietal of our wines, please ask them to contact the winery. We would be pleased to help plan and advertise a tasting or wine dinner at their location. It is always a pleasure to introduce our wines and gain new members in the Pearmund Cellars family.

Our Partners & Retailers

Pearmund Cellars Bee KeepersPartner:  The Prince William-Stafford Beekeeping Association provides education on the practical aspects of beekeeping, encourages the use of better and more productive methods in the apiary, promotes cooperation between the association and the community with regard to beekeeping, etc. The association meets the 2nd Tuesday of January, March, May, September, and November at the Virginia Cooperative Extension. Watch their new website for photos of Pearmund Cellars bees and beekeepers.

Their family has produced wine in northern Portugal for countless years so it is no surprise that new store offers an extraordinary variety of domestic and imported wines. They also offer beer, cheese, wine accessories, glassware, etc. and plan to host special tastings on Tuesday through Saturday.

Pearmund Cellars wines pair well with their excellent crab cakes and other gourmet dishes that are surprisingly innovative for a sports bar. Be sure to ask the bartender what's on the calendar because their website is still in progress. JP's stays open late on Thursday through Saturday nights for great food, great sports, and great times.
