Our People

Many Pearmund Cellars’ customers have met Ray Summerell, one of our dedicated tasting room volunteers. Besides spending his time pouring our fine wines, Ray has worked in property planning / management, information technology, spatial data services, program management, and business consulting for commercial and government customers. With this experience, Chris was very pleased when Ray offered to act as Chief Financial Officer for The Winery at La Grange. Ray’s expertise as a professionally-registered landscape architect and certified facility manager will also be very helpful. Stop by the winery to ask Ray how he ever finds time to pour wine for Pearmund Cellars!

Our Partners & Retailers

Partner:  Formed in January 2002 to help businesses leverage the power of the Internet, Moe Technologies provides web design, website construction, and search engine optimization services. Pearmund Cellar's webmaster uses Moe Technologies consulting services to improve the performance of our website and increase our winery's web presence. Bob Moe will also be the webmaster for The Winery at La Grange, Chris's new venture in Prince William County. Watch for changes in that website as the winery develops and its boutique brand is established. To that end, the winery partners are starting a contest to name their robust, rich, dark,  Bordeaux-style red wine. They are looking for a name that fits the winery's Virginia heritage.  If you would like to participate, email your ideas to Chris Pearmund.

Wine Store: The Coastal Wine Connection is located in Port Warwick, a planned community of Newport News, Virginia. Billed as the peninsula's Best New Wine and Gourmet Shop, the shop features hand-picked wines from around the world and the best wines made in Virginia! They also feature hard-to-find beers, gourmet cheeses, and a full-service deli. Their friendly, courteous, and knowledgeable staff is committed to serving customers needs (e.g., recipes). Try their Gloucester Cheese, Onions and Pancetta Bake with Pearmund Cellars' Petit Verdot, and note that the Coastal Wine Connection is the first wine store to become a corporate sponsor of the Virginia Wine and Food Society!

Restaurant:  Established in New England about 1949, Jake’s Restaurant (and Hero’s Pub) is located in the heart of Historic Old Town Manassas. It features fresh seafood, aged steaks, and a wide selection of other dishes deliciously-prepared and presented by dedicated, professional staff. Catering on- and off-premise parties, Jake's has earned a reputation for producing outstanding events at an unbeatable value. From rehearsal dinners to birthday bashes to business meetings to fund-raising events, the restaurant is a great venue. When Chris Pearmund isn't building new wineries or crafting fine wines, you may catch him at Jake's with a good brew and a rare steak.

Inn:  Located on 80 rolling acres in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Inn at Meander Plantation hosts a Southern cooking school, a fine-dining restaurant, and a beautifully-appointed bed and breakfast. Managed by Suzie Blanchard, the executive chef / owner and former food editor for 40 suburban newspapers, and Paul Deigl, the head chef and former celebrity chef, the inn is the perfect location to host your wedding, anniversary, birthday party, corporate retreat, or family reunion. Its historic surroundings, picturesque views, elegant furnishings, and unparalleled service make for memories that will last a lifetime.

Our Industry

Virginia's farm wineries and wine distributors both claim their survival is tied to the fate of HB 1288 sponsored by Delegate Christopher B. Saxman, R-20th District. This bill, allowing Virginia farm wineries and those in other states to distribute their products in Virginia without going through a licensed wholesale distributor, is intended to fix a state law that was found to violate the U.S. Constitution's Commerce Clause.

In addition, some farm wineries have been severely impacted by local governments placing strenuous and unreasonable restrictions on their ability to hold wine tasting lunches, dinners, and similar events on their premises. These restrictions seem counter-productive to Virginia’s advertised commitment to support agri-tourism.  HB 1435, sponsored by Delegate David B. Albo, R-42nd District, allows wineries to have tasting events by right, and prohibits localities from requiring special permits for these activities. Thankfully, this bill passed the House on January 25th and will now go to the Senate.

If you would like to support Virginia's small farm wineries with these bills and you live in Virginia, please send variations of the following letters to your district delegate and state representative.  If you would like to support Virginia's small farm wineries with these bills but you live outside Virginia, please send variations of the following letters to the delegate and state representative representing your favorite Virginia winery.

To find the appropriate delegate and representative, see the Virginia General Assembly website. Below are sample letters that may be helpful. Please cut and paste them as appropriate.  It's very easy to do send these letters by email, but postal mail is also appreciated.

Dear Delegate ______________:

I love Virginia wine and support the industry.  The purpose of this letter is to urge you to support legislation HB 1288.  This bill will allow licensed farm wineries to retain the right to self-distribute their wines.  Virginia is now acknowledged as “the most accomplished of the emerging wine regions in North America.”  This progress has been due, in a large part, to the consistent support of our legislature.

As you probably know, the right of farm wineries to deliver wine directly to retail shops and restaurants under the current Virginia Farm Winery license has been held unconstitutional and is currently under appeal.  I am urging you and others in your sphere of influence to take preemptive action, in this upcoming session, to preserve the right to self-distribute wine with a law that will withstand constitutional scrutiny.

I am concerned for the health of the industry and the availability of Virginia wines.  These small producers form the backbone of the industry and are now at risk.  The economic impact on small wineries by forcing them to use unneeded distributors cannot be overlooked. A small winery who self-distributes in its local market with its own employees would lose half its profits on those sales. Many wineries simply will not survive if they are forced to rely on distributors as their only means of reaching retail markets.

I ask that you support legislation that will help keep the wineries in business so that we can continue to enjoy Virginia wines, and our region can continue to benefit from the tourism and tax dollars generated.  Please vote in favor for HB 1288 aimed at allowing farm wineries to retain the right of self-distribution.  Thank you for your help.

Sincerely,

______________

Dear Representative ______________:

I am writing to discuss HB 1435, a bill which recently passed the House and will soon go before the Senate. I believe this bill is critical to the continued viability and growth of farm wineries in the Commonwealth. Some of my favorite wineries have been severely impacted by local governments placing strenuous and unreasonable restrictions on their ability to hold wine tasting lunches and dinners and similar events on their premises. These restrictions seem counter-productive to the advertised commitment of the Commonwealth to support the activities of agri-tourism based business. I am concerned that my fellow hard-working Virginians are being excluded from the potential business successes garnered by the ability to freely hold this type of event.

Section 15.2-2288 of the Code of Virginia prohibits a locality from requiring special exception or special use permits for production agriculture in an area zoned for agriculture as part of a zoning ordinance.

HB 1435 amended Virginia Code § 15.2-2288 by adding to the definition of production agriculture: “the making of wine and the conduct of activities having the purpose of promoting the sale of Virginia wines, including without limitation wine tastings, wine tasting lunches and dinners, musical presentations at which wine is marketed, and similar agritourism activities whether conducted in the vineyards or on the grounds of the farm winery, which activities are designed to increase agricultural sales at the farm winery and increase tourism in the Commonwealth.”  Under the bill, farm wineries will still need to comply with applicable noise ordinances, setback requirements, and the tight ABC restrictions controlling all winery activities.

HB 1435 allows wineries to have these events by right, and prohibits localities from requiring special permits for these activities. For the sake of all of my friends in the wine industry, I sincerely hope that you will do everything in your power to support the Senate version of HB 1435.

Very truly yours,

______________
