| In August, we bottled
our 2004 red varietals
including Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, and
Ameritage Reserve. Our Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec are currently
available
in our tasting room. Our Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits a dark
ruby garnet color with aromas of black currants and herbs on the nose.
On the palate, it reveals fresh tasting red and black currant fruit
that is full bodied, round in the mouth, with good tannic grip and a
long lasting finish. Our Malbec is medium-bodied with hints of
raspberry,
strawberry, and soft earthy overtones. It is the first Malbec bottled
at Pearmund Cellars and one of the few bottled in Virginia or in the
United States. The other reds will be released throughout the
fall months. We are now calling those who participated in our 2004
Wine Futures Program to pick-up their cases. |

Our Process |
|||||||||||||||
| In the
Vineyard: Despite the recent hot weather and rains, the
grapes are growing very
well. When we experienced similar weather in the summer of 2002, timely
hedging, leaf removal, thinning, and fertilizing
helped our growing conditions. We continued this practice this year so
it looks like we’ll have another great harvest. If the weather stays
consistent, our 2005 harvest is planned for the last two weeks of
September, but it may continue into October.
Hot sunny weather is great, but even with nasty storms like hurricanes,
tornados and hail, we have learned to make good with whatever Mother
Nature throws at us. In the Winery: In preparation for our 2005 harvest and due to increased interest in Pearmund Cellars wines, our staff is already working to increase next year's production. They are adding another layer to our OXO® racking system so that the capacity in our barrel room will increase by 40 barrels, bringing our total production to just shy of 6,000 cases of wine annually. |

Our People |
|||||||||||||||
| As a kid, you were
always asked about your summer vacation. As an
adult, you can still share your adventures. Many of our customers have
started taking Pearmund Cellars wines on their travels and are
sending pictures
of our wines in unsuspecting or unique places. This summer alone,
Pearmund wines have been spotted diving in the Caribbean, riding ducks
in Boston, jamming with musicians in Vienna, and watching from great
heights in London. We expect that photos of our wines on
hot
air balloons, hang gliders, and scenic helicopters
will arrive soon. For a whole new spin on “Where in the World?”, view
our online photo gallery
or check out our scrapbook in our tasting room. To include your land,
sea, or air adventures, send your digital images to webmaster@pearmundcellars.com
or drop printed photographs at the winery. |

For comprehensive Virginia wine country
directories, tour
guides, vintage reports, varietal news, tasting notes, or food pairing
suggestions, read the Virginia Wine Guide
on-line or join their mailing
list.
This independent consumers' guide is published six times a year
by the Virginia Wine and Food Society, Inc., whose mission is
to foster
appreciation for Virginia wines and Virginia foods that best accompany
them. Under the guidance of publisher Mike Potashnik, the guide
provides non-biased comparisons of Pearmund Cellars
wines with those from other Virginia wineries. Wine Store: Keith and Deanne Marshall's grass-fed cows produce cheese with smooth, creamy textures that are not found in commercially-processed cheese. And, what goes best with top-quality local cheese? Why local wine, of course! Located on the corner of Routes 522 and 20 in Unionville, Virginia, Marshal Farms' family-owned and operated dairy farm and country store sells gourmet cheeses, fresh-baked goods, sandwiches, fine wines (including ours), and more. However, dairy men and women are earily risers so don't forget to check their hours before stopping by. Our course, you can buy a variety of their excellent cheese at Pearmund Cellars too! Restaurant: After we featured Bonefish Grill in our last newsletter, their Gainesville staff did what few chain restaurants are willing to do: share a winning recipe. As a result, we invite you to try their Snapper Rhea with Lime Tomato Garlic Sauce either at home or in their Gainesville location. Don't forget to complement their tasty recipe with a bottle of Pearmund Cellars wine. Inn: Once owned by George Washington, the 1763 Inn is located in Virginia’s famed Hunt Country, at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and historic Ashby Gap. Bernie and Megan Kirchner offer their perfect setting for weekend getaways, romantic weddings, private parties, and corporate retreats. Nearby activities include fox hunting, trail rides, steeplechase races, polo matches, hiking, fishing, rafting, canoeing, vineyard tours, antique shops, and Civil War battlefields. Choose Pearmund Cellars wines to complement your stay at George's house. |

| Virginia
residents can show-off their love for local wineries with Virginia's
new wine license plate. The new license plate features the “Virginia
- First in Wine”
slogan with sloping vineyards against a backdrop of Virginia mountains
and a ripened grape cluster. Because this is a new program sponsored by
the Virginia Wineries
Association, the Virginia Wine Marketing Office is promoting
the collection of
the first 350 applications.
After the first 350 plates are issued, Virginia Department of
Transportation (VDOT) will make the plates available to the general
public at local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offices. The
application costs $25, but after the first 1,000 plates are produced, $15
from each application will be used to support viticultural and
enological research across the state of Virginia. Horizon Cellars, our sister winery located in Siler City, North Carolina, recently entered their first wine competition: the 1st Atlantic Seaboard Vinifera Wine Competition. Chris Pearmund, who serves as consultant, partner, and winemaker for Horizon Cellars, ended up “Four for Four,” winning a medal for each of the winery’s inaugural wines and making owner, Guy Loeffler, very pleased. Their 2004 Viognier took home a gold medal along with “Best in Category” honors, their 2004 Cabernet Franc and 2004 Chardonnay received silver medals, and a bronze medal was awarded to the 2004 Syrah. Sponsored by the Vinifera Wine Growers Association, the new competition is a regional event highlighting oenological advances in vinifera grape growing along the East Coast. Wineries from all states bordering the Atlantic, from Maine to Florida and including Vermont and West Virginia, were invited to join. Chris also earned gold medals for three other wines that were entered in the competition, making him the winner of more medals than any other winemaker! |
