Virginia Governor Tim Kaine
Expresses Interest in Commonwealth’s Agritourism
"Virginia Governor Tim Kaine (D) met with leading Virginia winemaker
and
winegrower, Chris
Pearmund today at Pearmund Cellars to discuss the future of Virginia
agritourism and the wine industry in particular. . . .
Pearmund hosted Governor Kaine to an impromptu tour of the wine making
operations, now in full swing in the middle of Virginia’s wine grape
harvest. Pearmund explained the close relationship between wine making,
retail sales, and the underpinning of vineyard (farming) operations
that are mostly conducted by small family- owned farm enterprises
across the state."

America: Virginia Wines Wow the Brits
“The Virginia tasting was a real eye-opener for all of us,” noted
Steven Spurrier in an email to me from England. “I think all the
tasters agreed that Viognier was the real star, then, for me, the
Bordeaux blends.” The Brits also liked Virginia Chardonnays, Petit
Verdot, and “a very good Cabernet Franc.”

Post: Virginia Vintages That Can Hold Their Own
"While Queen Elizabeth II visited Virginia last week to mark the 400th
anniversary of the founding of Jamestown, 65 wines representing 33 of
Virginia's 119 wineries were showcased May 2 at the Virginia Wine
Experience back home in London. Held at Vinopolis, a wine-themed
visitor attraction on the Thames a few miles from Buckingham Palace,
the event was intended to show London's media and trade just how far
Virginia wines have come. Today, Virginia is the fifth-largest
wine-producing state, with its winemakers winning national
competitions." |

Vine Spot : Everybody Loves Redmund
!
"The majority of Virginia wineries you visit will have at least one
friendly winery dog, whose chores in the vineyard and tasting room
keeps him or her quite busy day and night. In the vineyard, the winery
dog is responsible for warding off deer, rabbits, birds or any other
animal (or two legged friend) that might have a hankering for wine
grapes. In the tasting room, the winery dog puts on his public
relations hat to greet you in the parking lot or front door and welcome
you to the winery. Dezel is of the belief that Redmund has excelled in
these areas and deserving of what may be the very 1st doggy wine label
in Virginia!" |

Wine Trail Traveler Newsletter: Virginia
Wines Go to London
"This year is the 400th Anniversary of the founding of Jamestown by the
English. Several events have been planned to commemorate the founding
of Jamestown in 1607. One of the events planned will be the tasting of
Virginia wines at Vinopolis in London. The theme is 'Virginia: First in
Wine.' 'First in Wine' refers to the quality of Virginia wines
and to the established fact that Virginia was the first place in the
new world for the English to attempt the cultivation of grapes and
winemaking." |

Virginia’s Wine Industry
In their October/November issue, the Virginia
Sportsman included the History
of Virginia’s Wine Industry written by
our own Chris Pearmund: "Perhaps better known as the Mother of
Presidents, it can be argued that Virginia is also the birthplace of
the American wine industry. In fact, viticulture has been a vital part
of American History, particularly in our temperate Commonwealth, for
over four centuries."

Governor, National Trust Chief Tour Old Town Warrenton, Give Virginia
Main Street Awards (And Governor Buys Pearmund Cellars Wine)
"The governor and National Trust for Historic Preservation President
Richard Moe honored the revitalization efforts of 18 Virginia towns,
including Warrenton. ... The towns Wednesday received Virginia Main
Street Milestone Awards from the state Department of Housing and
Community Development. ... the governor took his time touring Old Town
businesses. ... marched down the sidewalk and into the Town Duck, a
gourmet shop operated by Annette Johnson. ... Mr. Warner headed
straight for the wine racks and picked out a bottle from Pearmund
Cellars, a winery near New Baltimore. Ms. Johnson charged him
$15.75 for it. Brown bag in hand, the governor continued his tour."

Post: Zoning Law Corks Plans For Winery - Vintners Seeking Changes in
County
"Winemakers John Delmare and Chris Pearmund envision building Prince
William County's first winery along the slopes of Bull Run Mountain.
Although the county has vineyards, it has no wineries where grapes are
cultivated, wine is produced and customers can dine on dishes paired
with specific wines. ... Some Prince William officials like the
idea of such a business opening in the county, predicting it would
enhance tourism. There's one problem: Local zoning laws permit
vineyards, winemaking and even food, as long as it's packaged cheese
and crackers. The existing laws don't allow such a business to prepare
meals, however. So, before the proposed vineyard can bear its first
fruits, the Board of County Supervisors would have to amend its zoning
ordinances to permit food service."

“ 'The sign of a truly great bottle of wine is representative of the
soil, location and the health of the land. By minimizing our impact on
the land we produce a distinctive product unlike any other wine
produced anywhere else.' Chris carries that philosophy throughout his
entire business, employing natural fertilizers and pesticides,
recycling and reusing whenever possible and letting nature warm and
cool his store, cellars and other structures. Maximizing energy
efficiency and minimizing energy costs were part of Pearmund’s business
plan from the start."

Progressive Farmer: Fauquier County is Best Place to Live in Rural America
According to Progressive Farmer, "There has never been a list like our
"Best Places To Live in Rural
America," so when we decided to tackle this project we had to blaze our
own trail. Rural counties have never been ranked this way before. But
our sister Time Inc. publication, Money magazine, is famous for its
annual Best Places issue that ranks cities. So we used the same
statistical research group, OnBoard LLC, that Money uses." Click on
