          Virginia Vineyard and Winery History

Local farmers enjoyed their share of Virginia wine in 1619, but Meriwether Vineyard was not established until 1976 and Pearmund Cellars Winery opened in 2003.

1740s Farm Turns to Vines in 1970s

  • 1619:   12th Jamestown law mandates landowners plant 10 grapevines per acre
  • 1740s:   Farmer built manor house and established 100-acre farm
  • 1800s:  Property's primary crop was first tobacco, then apples
  • 1920:   Dairy built when South African imports toppled apple income
  • 1920 - 1933:   Prohibition prevented wine production
  • 1960s:  Most of farm sold and subdivided into Valley Green Estates
  • 1971:   Virginia Farm Wineries Act re-establishes farm wineries
  • 1976:   Brad and Janell Buell built 2-acre, 9-varietal Meriwether Vineyard
  • 1984:   After varietal experimentation, Buells planted 15 Chardonnay acres
  • 1991:   Chris Pearmund purchased and improved Meriwether Vineyard 
  • 1995 - 2002:   Premium Chardonnay grapes sold to top Virginia wineries
  • 2003:   Chris Pearmund and investors establish Pearmund Cellars Winery
  • 2003:   Inital production of 4000 cases ready for opening day, May 31st
  • 2005:   Maximum production of 5000 cases available by 2nd anniversary
  • 2006:  First sister winery opens - Winery at LaGrange
